In addition, Strike a Light worked as a contemporary collections curator with the V&A museum, putting together exhibitions of artefacts sourced for the\u00a0Museum of Childhood<\/a>. The exhibition ran from 2006 -2008. Previous projects include a partnership oral history project with\u00a0Brighton Museum\u00a0<\/a>and WRVS\u00a0www.heritageplus.org.uk<\/a>, a four year project\u00a0with\u00a0English Heritage\u00a0<\/a>in their Community Outreach department, and experience o\u00a0the Kingston based environmental arts charity\u00a0Save the World.<\/a><\/p>\n Other work has been with\u00a0Independent Lives<\/a>\u00a0charity on their\u00a0Speaking up for Disability<\/a>\u00a0project, and\u00a0QueenSpark Books<\/a>\u00a0in Brighton. Strike a Light aims to strike a balance between art and heritage in a\u00a0community-minded\u00a0way that teaches and inspires, whilst helping to revitalize public spaces.<\/p>\n
We believe in the idea of life skills and education through creativity, generating greater social inclusion by working with marginalized and vulnerable groups, alongside all sections of the community on the historic sphere, public space, murals and celebratory arts.\u00a0This is the belief that all people can gain recreational enjoyment and social benefit from taking part in creative and artistic activities. It receives project based financial support from local organisations such as\u00a0Sussex Community Foundation<\/a>\u00a0amongst others,\u00a0and through partnership or sponsored\u00a0activities. We regularly run reminiscence, creative and heritage activities with older people and BME groups, \u00a0as well as arts and heritage workshops with children and young people, and curates heritage and arts events with clients such as\u00a0Fabrica\u00a0<\/a>gallery.<\/p>\n Strike a Light has previously been funded for activities of this kind by project grants from\u00a0Brighton and Hove Council<\/a>, The\u00a0Heritage Lottery Fund<\/a>, The Heritage Lottery Fund,\u00a0Communities First<\/a>, The Scarman Trust, Brighton and Hove Food Partnership and EB4U, as well as the\u00a0Arts Council\u00a0South East amongst others.<\/p>\n Our projects are predominantly about the importance of local community, the arts and\u00a0heritage, with the aim of manifesting a community of pride in public ownership, managing projects which improve cultural heritage and engender social development, using salvaged and recycled materials wherever possible.<\/p>\n Strike a Light has public liability insurance up to \u00a310 million pounds and all freelancers and volunteers\u00a0have fully enhanced DBS (CRB) checks.<\/p>\n Strike a Light have worked as artists and heritage practitioners in a variety of fields for many years.<\/p>\n Primarily in mosaic, but latterly in graphic design, carnival costume and textiles (See\u00a0Community Art<\/a>\u00a0section).<\/p>\n These projects have been with numerous clients such as the Arts Council,\u00a0Creative Partnerships<\/a>\u00a0,\u00a0V&A Museum<\/a>,\u00a0Chichester Festivities<\/a>,\u00a0Bow Arts Trust<\/a>,\u00a0Cultural Cooperation<\/a>,\u00a0Adur Council,\u00a0<\/a>Brighton and Hove Council<\/a>,\u00a0<\/a>UNLTD<\/a>,\u00a0<\/a>Scarman Trust, and\u00a0<\/a>Groundswell\u00a0<\/a>for community art and well-being projects with schools and the local community<\/a>\u00a0amongst many others.<\/p>\n Strike a Light has many years experience as community artists working with children and community groups, such as with\u00a0Croydon Council\u00a0<\/a>on children\u2019s summer schemes in 2005 and 2006. \u00a0Nicola Benge, Creative Director of Strike a Light holds an NVQ level 4 FE teaching qualification which enables her to teach in the community and in Further Education, as well as certification from Cultural Cooperation for working with multi ethnic groups and children in the arts sphere to encourage further integration. She also has arts qualifications in community art, mosaic and other creative arts and a Post-Graduate Certificate in Arts and Heritage Management from\u00a0London Metropolitan University<\/a>.<\/p>\n Strike a Light has also worked in the field of heritage through work as \u00a0Heritage Coordinator with nationwide charity (W)RVS\u00a0<\/a>and as freelance reminiscence facilitator for numerous clients such as\u00a0Age Exchange<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Brent Council<\/a>, with the over 55s and young people to promote heritage and social history exhibitions though oral history recordings, inter-generational activities and reminiscence workshops, resulting in \u2018memory quilts\u2019, plays, interactive tea services and a heritage website to record memories of the way we used to live.
